A Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-400, registration PK-GWM performing flight GA-192 from Jakarta to Medan (Indonesia), was at FL320 near Palembang, when the passenger cabin got cool. Adjustments of cabin heating by the crew did not succeed, the passengers continued to freeze. During the approach to Medan strange noises were heard, then passengers in row 18 could see some damage in the roof overhead seat row 16, which they thought was a pierced fuselage. The airplane landed safely.
Initial reports in Indonesia reported a pierced/ruptured fuselage skin.
However, the Indonesian Transportation Safety Board KNKT said, that the problem was within the air conditioning system of the airplane, a rubber seal opened producing the reported noises and looked like a ruptured fuselage skin. The damage was repaired, the airplane is already back in service. The KNKT recommends to inspect all other Indonesian B737-400s as well to avoid a repeat.
